Enter the Variable Specifications

After a variable is created, you must first be sure to enter/edit the variable specifications in the Specs/Display panel of the variable panel. For a variable with a VAR_TYPE of Data you must also be sure that the correct DISPLAY_TYPE is entered. For the BGSMc variable the specifications are:

Name Value
Variable TypeData
Data TypeCDF_FLOAT
Time VaryingYes
Dimensions1
Sizes3
Display TypeTime Series

After entering these values, you should notice that the interface has changed slightly. Some fields that were greyed out have become enabled while others have changed appearance. One obvious change is that the Label 1 field has changed from a box that allows editing to one that does not.

This is because the ISTP Guidelines state that a 0 dimensional Time Series should have a single label, while a 1 dimensional Time Series should have multiple labels. The only method to have multiple labels is to have the labels contained in a seperate variable. The pull down for the Label 1 field will allow you to choose a label variable (if there are any proper ones available) or create a new one. The labelling is covered in the next step.
