Large Magnetospheric Magnetic Field Database NSSDCA ID: SPHE-00761 Availability: At NSSDC, Ready for Offline Distribution (or Staging if Digital) Time span: 1966-07-01 to 1986-06-01 Description This is a large magnetospheric magnetic field database compiled from the measurements of 11 earth-orbiting spacecraft during 1966-1986. The contributing spacecraft are Explorer 33 and 35, IMP 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, HEOS 1 and 2, and ISEE 1 and 2. The data have been edited to exclude data outside the magnetosphere. There are 79,745 records, each with an average magnetic field vector measured within the magnetosphere somewhere between 4 and 60 earth radii. Each record also has available the measured magnetic field with the earth's internal field subtracted and also the Kp, Dst, and AE geomagnetic indices and solar wind/IMF values when available (roughly half the time). These parameters will allow sorting the data to study the magnetospheric field configuration under various solar wind and geomagnetic conditions. This database is a significant resource for investigating the distant magnetic field of the earth as perturbed by the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field. Provided with the data is a package of Fortran programs (compiled by one of the authors) to easily rotate the data to many other coordinate systems. The database contains approximately 14 megabytes, in ASCII format, and is described in the article by D. H. Fairfield, N. A. Tsyganenko, A. V. Usmanov, and M. V. Malkov, "A large magnetospheric magnetic field database," J. Geophys. Res., 99, pp. 11,319-11,326, June 1, 1994. This data set is available via anonymous ftp from nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov in the directory [SPACE_PHYSICS.MAGSPHER_DATA].
