[Note added August, 2012: Newly reprocessed SWE data based on nonlinear anisotropic fitting were created by the SWE team at CfA and provided to SPDF in 2012. These new data have been inserted into the directories that previously held the now-superseded 1994-2004 data. The now-superseded data files, and the documentation files specifically relevant to those data files, are accessible through this directory ] [Note added August, 2005. The 1995-2001 data in this directory were initially provided to NSSDC by MIT with non-solar wind data removed at MIT. However, subsequent data transfers for 2002 and later involved files with all (solar wind and non-solar wind) available data. For consistency with the pre-2002 data, we have removed non-solar wind data from these files for inclusion in this directory. We used the Wind interplanetary-intervals information at http://wind.nasa.gov/mfi/bow_shock.html. However, given the value of the non-solar wind data, we have created within this directory a subdirectory, .../2-min/all_orbit_phases/ to hold the yearly all-orbit-phases data for the full 1995-2004 perion provided by MIT.] This directory provides access to solar wind proton and alpha particle parameters (densities, flow and thermal velocities) at full resolution (92-sec.) from the Solar Wind Experiment (SWE) on the Wind spacecraft. The SWE Principal Investigator is K.W.Ogilvie of Goddard Space Flight Center. The ion data of this directory were prepared by Justin Kasper at MIT and by A.J. Lazarus of MIT, SWE Co-Investigator. The data are organized into monthly files. High level details of the formats and contents of the files' data records are contained in the documentation_jck.doc file of this directory. It was created by Justin Kasper at MIT as the documentation file intended to accompany the 1995 data file. However, virtually all its contents are generic to all years' data files. A separate file, file_specific_info.txt, contains an aggregation of all the file-specific information in the mostly-common year-specific files that Justin provided. [Note added August, 2005. The all-orbit-phases annual files were created at MIT by concatenating over daily files which themselves captured the type of information contained in file_specific_information.txt (counts of spectra available, and rejected for various reasons). Such information has not been integrated from its available daily resolution state to an annual resolution state which would enable the extension of the file_specific_information.txt.] A far more detailed discussion of the data processing (relevant to both the new and superseded data), as excerpted from the 2002 Ph.D. dissertation of Dr. Kasper, is available as a PDF file (see ftp://nssdcftp.gsfc.nasa.gov/spacecraft_data/wind/plasma_swe/2-min/thesis.pdf). -------------------------------------------------------------- Acknowledgement: Use of these data in publications should be accompanied by acknowledgements of the National Space Science Data Center(NSSDC), Space Physics Data Facility(SPDF) and Principal Investigator K.W.
