This directory provides access to monthly files of Wind/SWE
definitive proton and alpha particle plasma parameters determined
starting in 2012 by non-linear anisotropic fitting of bimaxwellian
distribution functions to measured plasma distributions. The data
extend back the 1994 start of mission, are at ~92s resolution, and
exclude non-solarwind phases of the Wind orbit.
There are subdirectories for (a) the 1995-2004 data that are
superseded by the data processing of 2012 and later (see subdirectory
"old") and (b) for newly processed data that do not exclude non-solar
wind intervals (see subdirectory "all_orbit_phases"). These
subdirectories have readme's specific to their data.
The file "documentation_jck.txt" was created by Justin Kasper
and Michael Stevens of CfA in 2012 as a descriptor of 1994 data.
It contains the data record format and detailed documentation on
the "Fit Flag" which was not part of the superseded SWE data set.
(Other parameters in this data version not included in its
predecessor are perpendicular and parallel components of alpha
particle thermal velocity and the time of peak charge flux during
each observed distribution function.) Record format and fit flag
documentation are common to all years. The documentation_jck.txt
file also contains year-specific counts of input spectra, of
spectra removed at CfA for each of three reasons, and of the
spectra whose parameters (protons and alpha particles separately)
are included in the data set.
The file "file_specific_info.txt" contains an aggregation of the
year-specific data file count information described in the previous
paragraph and contained in each of the annual CfA-provided
descriptive files. The concatenation was done at SPDF.
"Thesis.pdf" is an excerpt from Justin Kasper's Ph.D. dissertation
that describes the SWE Faraday Cup and the bimaxwellian analysis
used to produce the plasma parameters of this data set and its
predecessor.
The extraction of solarwind-only data from CfA-provided all-orbit-
phase data was done at SPDF using the Wind bow shock crossing time
information available at http://wind.nasa.gov/mfi/bow_shock.html,
supplemented by a last couple of JHK-identified bow shock crossings
in 2003-4 beyond the end of the referenced web page.
Note that these solarwind-only data are alternatively accessible
with graphical browse and subsetting capabilities from the FTPbrowser
interface at https://omniweb.gsfc.nasa.gov/ftpbrowser/wind_swe_2m.html
