File: ULYGAS_DIR.txt Version: NSSSDC 06/15/2001 JFC ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sky Map Images in Ecliptic Coordinates from the Ulysses Neutral Gas (GAS) Experiment Dates: 1990 - 1999 Principal Investigator: Dr. Manfred Witte Max-Planck-Institut fur Aeronomie Postfach 20 37191 Katlenburg Germany E-mail: ECD1::LINMPI::WITTE (NSI/DECNET) Description: This new data set consists of pixel map data (DATA) in ascii format, GIF image, and postscript (PS) image files for sky maps accummulated from neutral gas particles measured by the neutral gas (GAS) experiment on Ulysses. There are three types of sky maps in the corresponding subdirectories: (1) full sky, (2) interstellar helium, and (3) Jupiter. The counts and coordinates of each sky map pixel are given in the pixel map files in the DATA subdirectories, while the full images are provided in GIF and postscript (PS) format, respectively in the GIF and PS subdirectories. The GIF files are most easily viewed with a web browser like Netscape or Internet Explorer. The files ULYGAS_GUIDE.txt, ULYGAS_FORMAT.txt, and ULYGAS_REF.txt respectively give an overall description of the various datatypes, the record format for the DATA datatype, and a list of GAS-related publications. Further details on the GAS experiment and data may be found in the NSSDC Master Catalog via the Ulysses flight project page (see below) and in the GAS instrument papers in the ULYGAS_REF.txt file. Related Information and Data: Further details on the spacecraft, experiment, data sets at NSSDC, and related WWW sites can be found on the Ulysses flight project page under http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/space/ Acknowledgement: Use of these data in publications should be accompanied at minimum by acknowledgements of the National Space Science Data Center and the responsible Principal Investigator defined in the experiment documentation provided here.
