ECOM 721 Data and Software

Data Description

The Data for this project is listed first by ground station and then by number; the number indicates chronological order. The ground station name should be largely irrelevant. Note that the files are compressed using UNIX "compress" so to utilize one of them you will have to "uncompress" them. A complete description of the specific format for each data file is given here. This should also enable you to write your own software if you so desire.

After 7-04-79, ECOM was occasionally turned off without notification. Though the two long periods during which it was turned off are indicated on the log, there may be short off periods interspersed in the remainder.

Accuracy on the date of various events is plus or minus one day.

Important Note On Filtered Data Totals

After the undervoltages of July and August 1979, the duty cycle for data collection of P78-1 dropped drastically. Rough estimates are that 50% of daylight data and 20% of night data were collected after 9-1-79. Hence all observing times with the filtered detector (the only one in use after that date) should be multiplied by those approximate factors. Unfiltered and low resolution data were taken only during the period in which the spacecraft data duty cycle was 100%.

Low Resolution - Both Detectors

Grating Step Spectral Coverage (Å) Revs = Days = Seconds
16 508 - 1155 79 5.3 4.6x10^5
19 553 - 1200 8 0.5 4.0x10^4
23 614 - 1261 6 0.4 3.0x10^4

Total Days = 6.2

Summary

Up through the official turn-off date of 3-15-80, ECOM-721 was in orbit for 384 days; it collected data on roughly 343 of those days. Up through roughly 9-1-79, the data collection duty cycle was 100%. That is, if ECOM was turned on, its data as being recorded and telemetered. After 9-1-79, the data collection duty cycle dropped drastically. Hence, after this date, the log is indicative of whether the instrument was turned on and in what configuration during some extended event. However, our current documentation is insufficient to determine whether the data was being recorded during a transient event.
