EPI-Lo Instrument Description ======================================================================== From [9]: The Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (ISOIS) suite is led by the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI). The ISOIS suite is intended to determine both gradual (shock accelerated) and impulsive (flare accelerated) solar energetic particle (SEP) events: energy spectra, composition (electrons, protons, major heavy elements) timing, and pitch angle distributions. The ISOIS suite is composed of two instruments, EPI-Lo and EPI-Hi that share a common bracket for mounting to the spacecraft. EPI-Lo, the Energetic Particle Instrument - Low energy spectrum EPI-Lo is a Time-of-Flight (TOF) based mass spectrometer designed and built by JHU/APL that measures: energetic electrons: <=0.05MeV to >=0.5MeV ions: <=0.05MeV/nucleon to >=5 MeV/nucleon up to a maximum energy of 15MeV over 2 * PI steradians. It resolves all major heavy ion species and 3He and 4He over much of the energy range in multiple directions. EPI-Lo covers the critical energy range from suprathermal energies (approx 50 keV/nuc) up to the lower portion of EPI-Hi energy range with a single instrument. [10] describes the 'mushroom' shape of the EPI-Lo sensor: Overviews of the SPP mission show EPI-Lo as part of the ISOIS investigation on the SPP spacecraft and discuss the science goals of the mission [Kinnison et al., 2013; Fox et al., 2015]. This specific example of the Mushroom design illustrates that half the sky is densely sampled by 80 apertures. It further illustrates that by employing 2 SSD pixels per octant there are actually 160 overlapping constituent FOVs. The total solid angle coverage is 1.2 * PI steradian. EPI-Lo Field of View (FOV) ======================================================================== EPI-Lo has 8 octants, or wedges, each having 10 apertures, for a total of 80 apertures. Each wedge and aperture has its own reference frame, which is defined in the Solar Probe Plus spacecraft frame definitions kernel. Frame naming and numbering conventions are given there. Each aperture has three FOVs: ion, particle, and combined ion and particle. [8] describes the FOV modeling using ray tracing. Rays are drawn from the outer edges of the trapezoid-shaped detector and out through the edges of the circular aperture opening. The resulting vectors are presented in [7] for each detector (ion, particle, and combined), in the spacecraft reference frame. The fields of view in this instrument kernel were derived from the drawings in [4] and [6], not from the ray tracing. FOV angles and distances were calculate from [4]. The FOV shape was modeled from the diagrams of the trapezoidal baffle [6]. [11] describes these calculations in greater depth. For a given aperture, the boresight and boundary corner vectors of each of the three FOVs is given in the reference frame of its aperture. The fields of view have NAIF IDs whose last two digits follow the convention described in the frames kernel. The third digit in the NAIF ID for combined FOVs is 4, for ion FOVs is 5, and for electron FOVs is 6. Thus, combined FOVs use IDs -964## ion FOVs use IDs -965## particle FOVs use IDs -966## At the end of the FOV definitions below is a section mapping these NAIF ID codes to string names for the fields of view.
