8 s Master File Rates

Description

This data collection consists of 8-second averages of the outputs of all of the instruments on Injun 4. The data were originally written in BCD format. The data have 400 three-character words per logical record with 10 logical records per physical record. There were 47 files of data originally, which condensed to 6 files of data in the restored higher density form.

The outputs, in counts/second and/or accumulated counts are: thermal electron counts from the Retarding Potential Analyzer (RPA); counts from the seven GM Detectors; counts from the P-N Junction Detector; counts from the four CDS Detectors; and counts, scintillator voltages, and logarithm of responses from the two Plastic Scintillators.

Although data from the RPA are included herein, the Principal Investigator of that instrument reported that no meaningful data from the experiment were output during the time interval covered by this collection, due to battery failure early in the flight. Also, three of the four CdS detectors had inflight background counting rates in excess of about 700 counts/second, and the fourth had a rate of about 30 to 50 counts/second.

In addition to the detector outputs, these data contain universal time, longitude, latitude, altitude, geomagnetic longitude and latitude, invariant latitude, McIlwain's L-shell parameter, scalar geomagnetic field strength, B/B0, various magnetic indices, and data quality indicators.
