Subject: IMP 8 Data Available from NSSDC's NDADS Mass Storage System Date: August 7, 2000 Author: Joe King (king@nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov) This file is intended to identify the IMP 8 data sets whose files are accessible from NSSDC's NDADS Mass Storage System. By way of overview, the IMP 8 spacecraft (international ID = 73-078A) produced voluminous data from the following experiments. Only NDADS-accessible data sets are explicitly identified under the experiment lines below. 73-078A-01 Magnetometer, Lepping/GSFC * 15-s data in PI-provided binary 15-s data converted to ASCII by NSSDC 1-min data in PI-provided ASCII 1-min ISTP-program Key Parameters (KP) 15&20-s data as part of Merge 73-078A-02 Plasma, Lazarus/MIT * 1-min data as part of Merge 1-min ISTP-program Key Parameters (KP) 73-078A-03 Energetic Particles, Ipavich/U.Md. * 11-min fluxes, many Q and E/Q 73-078A-04 Particles (LEPEDEA), Frank/Iowa * 73-078A-05 E. Particles (EPE), Williams/APL * 20-sec data as part of Merge 73-078A-06 Energetic Particles, Stone/Caltech 73-078A-07 Energetic particles, Lopate/Chicago * 73-078A-08 E. Particles (CPME), Decker/APL * 20-sec data as part of Merge 73-078A-09 Energetic Particles, McGuire/GSFC * LED & MED pulse height data (PHAS) * Counts data (CNTS) * 73-078A-10 Plasma, Gosling/LANL 2-min solar wind parameters * Additional data from these experiments are electronically accessible at PI sites and/or on other NSSDC systems; see the IMP 8 Web page at http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/space/imp-8.html Additional IMP data, not yet electronically accessible, are archived at NSSDC from all the instruments above. See the NSSDC Master Catalog (http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/nmc/sc-query.html) for descriptions of these data. The NMC also provides descriptions of the IMP spacecraft and of each of the IMP experiments. Maryland data set is 11MIN_UMD_ASCII. NSSDC has these data into 2000 but was delaying adding to NDADS pending move of data from NDADS to a magdisk/ftp environment. Contact request@nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov for e-access to the later data. +++ Datatype name for the GME PHAS data set is GME_PHAS_IEEE_GZ; for the GME CNTS data set it is GME_CNTS_IEEE_GZ. These data are in 4-day files corresponding to the project-defined IMP Interval numbers NNNN, but they may be requested through the SPyCat WWW interface by specifying the desired date span. See the Readme file for more information. ** Datatype name for Merge (which contains CPME, EPE, MAG, and PLS/MIT data) is MRG_20S_ASCII_GZ. NSSDC holds Merge data up to current time, although not all of it has been ingested yet. It is expected to all be available within a few months as NSSDC revises its data distribution system from the current NDADS system. It is expected that users of the gzipped Merge data will be able to download these files and decompress (g-unzip) them to their basic ASCII format. However, an ancillary file at ftp://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/misc/docs/b46613.txt gives further instructions on this if needed. In addition, a file of uncompressed records for January 3, 1992, is contained at ftp://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/misc/docs/b46541.txt for those wishing to compare their decompression results with pre-compressed records. *** These field and plasma KP data sets were originally created by the IMP PI's (Lepping and Lazarus), starting with mid-1992 data, for providing to the ISTP CDHF multi-spacecraft KP collection. This entire collection is now available from NSSDC via both NDADS (SPyCAT or ARMS, CDF format only) and from CDAWeb (CDF or ASCII). The main value of these KP data sets relative to the other IMP/MAG and IMP/PLA/MIT data sets identified in this file is that the KP data sets are typically current to within a week or two. These IMP KP data sets are SPyCAT-retrievable from the spacecraft=IMP button, but must be retrieved from ARMS using project=ISTP. Their datatype names for ARMS requests are IMP-8_MAG and IMP-8_PLA, and their EID's are of the form yyyymmdd. In the table of format statements below, we point to CDAWeb for these KP data sets; users can see what parameters are contained in these data sets through CDAWeb.
