Ancillary data are required for the proper use of these data
This data sets contains the high resolution (1/2 second) data from the DE-2 LANGmuire probes experiment. The data were provided by the PI team on 9-track tapes in a highly compressed VAX/VMS binary format. They are encapsulated with SFDU voldesc and format files. The SFDU files describe the mission, experiment, data, and data format in great detail. VOLDESC and FORMAT files are included with this data set. The PI team has developed software to read the highly compressed format and to deduce electron temperature and density from the volt-ampere curves. This software package is available as a separate data set (SPIO-00288). The LANG data set does not include orbit parameters. Orbit information can be obtained by using the orbit/attitude database and software that is part of the DE-2 UA data set (SPIO-00174). NSSDC has used the PI-provided software and the UA orbit/attitude database and software to generate daily files of the LANG geophysical parameters (density, temperature, potential) and corresponding orbit parameters in ASCII format. This NSSDC-generated data set is available online from NSSDC's anonymous ftp archive at
