Dynamics Explorer-2 (DE 2) Langmuir Probes Experiment (LANG) Data
This directory gathers data for the LANG insturment that flew on the DE 2 spacecraft
which was launched on 3 August 1981 into an elliptical orbit with an altitude range
of 300 km to 1000 km and re-entered the atmosphere on 19 February 1983.
The directory includes the following files:
format_description_ASCII.txt: Format description of ASCII data. The same parameters are also
included in the CDF data files.
SFDU_description_binary.txt: The SFDU description of the format of the original binary data
list_on_off_times.txt: List of instrument on/off times
list_problem_times.txt: List of problem times
list_times_spinning_sc.txt: Times when spacecraft was spinning
The directory includes the following sub-directories:
/Ne_Te_500ms_ascii (NSSDC ID: 81-070B-09F)
This data set consists of the highest resolution (0.5 second) data from the DE-2
LANG instrument for the time period from Aug 3, 1981 to Feb 18, 1983. The ASCII
version was generated at NSSDC from the originally submitted LANG binary data using
the PI-provided software. NSSDC also added orbit parameters and omitted time periods
of bad data (see documents (1), (4) and (5) below). The original LANG binary data
(81-070B-09D) and the related software and list files (81-070B-09C) are available
from NSSDC's offline archive (request@nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov).
/plasma500ms_lang_cdaweb
The same data in CDF. They can be also plotted, listed and downloaded through CDAWeb at
http://cdaweb.gsfc.nasa.gov/
The LANG data are also available at 16-second time resolution in the UA directory at
The 16-second UA data are also available on ATMOweb for plotting and analysis at
Please acknowledge the NASA Space Physics Data Facility and the instrument's
