This is the README file for D2LEP1 D2LEP1 contains the Dynamics Explorer-2 (D2) LAPI electron data from the programmable power supply 1 (PPS-1), which was included within the LAPI VAX binary data. The D2LEP1 CDF files were generated by converting the VAX binary format stored at the Space Physics Data Facility (SPDF). The VAX binary was converted from the original Sigma-9 machine that was used to collect and process Dynamics Explorer telemetry. Several status bytes are included in this CDF and indicates the Status of the energy scan of LAPI and of processing achieved at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). These were defined as follows: Status Meaning Number of Bits 5 SPDF Bad Sensor ID 1 6 SPDF Previous Sensors Differs 1 7 SPDF Time Gap 1 There are 64 defined voltage steps within each PPS. They are indexed from 0 to 63. Step 0 is the highest voltage (energy) and step 63 is the lowest voltage (energy). PPS voltage stepping occurs in a decay pattern. The LAPI PPS Start Step contains the index at which the PPS starts its decay. The LAPI PPS Stop Step contains the index of the last step of the PPS decay. The LAPI PPS Skip Step contains the number of steps which are skipped during the decay sweep. The LAPI PPS Step Rate is an index which indicates how many multiples of the accumulation period occur before the next step (an accumulation period is 31.25 msec). The SPDF status byte defines the processing undergone when converting the original DE telemetry from its Sigma-9 format to its VAX binary format. The SPDF status byte was meant to describe the values that were encountered when reading the Sigma-9 magnetic tape. Bits 3, 6, and 7 have been extracted from the SPDF Status Flag. Bit 3 indicates when the SPDF found a Bad Sensor ID for LAPI, bit 6 when the SPDF found the Previous LAPI Sensors Differs from the current sensors, and bit 7 when the SPDF detected a Time Gap in telemetry. The remainder of the bits were not defined in the SPDF documentation. These SPDF flags are specific to LAPI sensor data and telemetry. This CDF contains two types of spectral data. The first type of spectral data from the LAPI instrument as measured on the spacecraft. The second type of spectral data is the threshold value, defined as the 1 count level. This CDF file contains LAPI spectral data in the following units where -3.4e+38 is used to indicate a fill value: Name Unit Comment Telemetry Index lookup table index stored in telemetry counts c/acc actual counts in the accumulation period DNF cnts/(cm**2 sr s eV) differential number flux DEF ergs/(cm**2 sr s eV) differential energy flux DF sec**3/m**6/sr distribution function It also contains the energy scan variable as the energy index and energy value. The energy index is the PPS energy (or voltage) step. The energy values are obtained by using the voltage represented at the PPS index and multiplying by the Sensitivity value for the SPS unit. Expressed in eV, the energy in Joule is just the multiplication by the conversion factor 1.602e-19 Joule/eV. Relating the energy to velocity of the particle in m/s gives SQRT (2*E/M) where E is the energy in Joule and M is the particle mass (9.11e-31 kg for electrons and used for LAPI, the mass of a proton, 1.67E-27 kg). Often, the velocity is expressed in km, so just divide the velocity in m/s by 1000 to obtain the particle velocity in km/s. The LAPI experiment had 15 Soft Particle Spectrometers (SPSs) mounted on a scan platform which rotated to keep LAPI aligned with the projection of the magnetic field within the LAPI view plane. This plane was parallel to the x-y plane of the spacecraft. An aspect magnetometer was part of the LAPI experiment and it controlled the scan platform to keep the LAPI aligned with the the component of the magnetic field which lies within the scanner rotation plane. The scanner rotated to keep the LAPI SPS units always mounted in the sane direction with respect to the downward direction of the magnetic field. The names of the SPS units were defined as being their mounting angles with respect to the downward direction of the particle velocity vector. Table 1 shows the alignment of the LAPI sensors. The sensor names are the mounting angles of the sensors, which are the approximate precipitation angles with respect to the magnetic field. Each SPS unit detects both electrons and ions. Four SPS units had a 5 deg x 5 deg field of full view and were aligned on the plus and minus sides of the measurement plane by 2.5 deg. These units were designated the 0+, 0-, 180+, and 180- sensors. The remainder of the 11 SPS units had a 5 deg x 20 deg full field of view and were orientated so that the 5 deg direction was in the scanner rotation plane (centered at the mounting angle) which is the x-y plane of the spacecraft. Each of these SPS units measured from 10 deg above the rotation plane to 10 deg below the measurement plane. The SPS units were mounted in three stacks of five. Their assignments are shown in Table 2 along with other instrument characteristics (DELTA E is the width of the energy channel, Ec is the center energy of the channel response, and V is the voltage applied to the deflection plates by the PPS). There were two high voltage power supply (HVPS) units which supplied constant high voltage power to the sensors. There were also two programmable power supply (PPS) units which supplied bipolar power to the particle separation system which stepped through deflection voltages to generate the energy spectrum. The assignments of HVPS and PPS connections were such that failures in these power supplies would still allow meaningful science to be performed. Table 2. The multiples are the PPS stepping rate stored as an integer byte value. The geometric factor is based on the physical volume of space viewed and is 1.36e-4 cm**2 sr for the 5x20 degree SPSs and 2.16e-5 cm**2 sr for the 5x5 deg SPSs. The number of counts in an accumulation period is corrected by dividing by the detector efficiency. The corrected number of counts in an accumulation interval is divided by the accumulation period to give the count rate. The count rate is divided by the geometric factor and divided by the width of the energy window to give the differential number flux. The width of the energy window is the DELTA E/Ec factor given in table 2 is relative to the center energy (Ec) of the energy step. The center energy of the energy step is different for each sensor and is given at the Table 5 at the bottom of this README. The differential energy flux is generated by multiplying the center energy in eV from the tables below and then dividing by the conversion factor of 1.602e-12 ergs/eV. Finally, the distribution function is obtained by multiplying the differential number flux by the factor of M**2/(2 * Ec) and multiplying by 1e4 cm**2/m**2 and dividing by (1.602e-19 Joule/eV)**2 where Ec is the center energy in eV for the sensor given in Table 5 below and M is the particle mass (9.11e-31 kg for electrons and used for LAPI, the mass of a proton, 1.67E-27 kg).
