Dynamics Explorer-2 (DE 2) Low Altitude Plasma Instrument (LAPI) Data This directory gathers data for the LAPI instrument that flew on the DE 2 spacecraft which was launched on 3 August 1981 into an elliptical orbit with an altitude range of 300 km to 1000 km and re-entered the atmosphere on 19 February 1983. The directory includes the following files: SFDU_description_instrument.txt: SFDU Description of the instrument and associated files. SFDU_format_description.txt: SFDU Description of the data file format description_IDL_code.txt: Description of the data processing IDL code list_data_files: List of all data files description_data_list_file.txt: Description of the following data file list file The directory includes the following sub-directory: /highres_vmsbin (NSSDC ID: 81-070B-08A) The LAPI data are stored in VAX format Stand-Alone Telemetry (SATM) files, which include the raw particle data, high energy Geiger counts, spacecraft orbital data and raw magnetic field data used in computing pitch angles. Data are available from soon after launch (81228) to re-entry (83049) with some outages due to spacecraft flip periods and instrument problems. The individual data files have names of the form LAPI_LyydddhhmmC.SATM (for a specific data file starting in hour hh and minute mm) (see list_data_files.txt for a listing of all data file names). Please acknowledge the NASA Space Physics Data Facility and the instrument's Principal Investigator for data usage.
