Dynamics Explorer-2 (DE 2) wind and Temperature Spectrometer (WATS) Data This directory gathers data for the WATS instrument that flew on the DE 2 spacecraft which was launched on 3 August 1981 into an elliptical orbit with an altitude range of 300 km to 1000 km and re-entered the atmosphere on 19 February 1983. The directory includes the following files: format_description_ASCII.txt: Format description of ASCII data. The same parameters are also included in the CDF data files. SFDU_description_binary.txt: The SFDU description of the format of the original binary data SFDU_description_instrument.txt: SFDU instrument and data description description_processing.txt: Description of processing at NSSDC PI_program_correction.for: PI-provided FORTRAN program for data correction read_a_o.for: FORTRAN subroutine for reading the o/a data base NSSDC_processing_program.for: FORTRAN data processing program used at NSSDC https://spdf.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/documents/old/miscellaneous_documents_from_nssdc/b47610.for The directory includes the following sub-directories: /n_T_v_2s_ascii (NSSDC ID: 81-070B-04C): This data set contains all the data measured by the WATS instrument during the DE-2 mission and covers the time period Aug 8, 1981 to Feb 18, 1983. The data set provides neutral densities (O, N2), temperature, and wind (vertical and horizontal) in ASCII format at a time resolution of 2 seconds. The original PI-provided binary data are described in the SFDU documents. Several data processing steps were done at NSSDC (see document (4) below). /wind2s_wats_cdaweb: The same data in CDF. They can be also plotted, listed and downloaded through CDAWeb at http://cdaweb.gsfc.nasa.gov/ The WATS data are also available at 16-second time resolution in the UA directory at The 16-second UA data are also available on ATMOweb for plotting and analysis at Please acknowledge the NASA Space Physics Data Facility and the instrument's Principal Investigator for data usage.
