Dynamics Explorer-1 (DE 1) Plasma Wave Instrument (PWI) Data This directory gathers data for the PWI instrument that flew on the DE 1 spacecraft. DE-1 was launched on 3 August 1981 into an elliptical orbit with an altitude range of 570 km to 23 000 km (3.63 Earth radii) and ceased operations in January 1991. /highres_vmsbin (NSSDC ID: 81-070A-02A) The PWI data files are daily files of 5 to 8 MB size. The basic resolution of the DC electric field measurement is 16 samples/second. Each PWI record contains 8 seconds of data including the date and time of the start of the record, orbit/attitude data. Source code is provided to extract and calibrate the PWI data as explained in SSCDOC. Wideband analog data and graphics software are held at the PI site. In June of 1984 (day 175) a malfunction in the DE-1 spacecraft data-handling system prevented access to high frequency data. PWI data and information can be also obtained from the PWI homepage at http://www-pw.physics.uiowa.edu/plasma-wave/de/home.html.
