Dynamics Explorer-1 (DE 1) Retarding Ion Mass Spectrometer (RIMS) Data This directory gathers data for the RIMS instrument that flew on the DE 1 spacecraft. DE-1 was launched on 3 August 1981 into an elliptical orbit with an altitude range of 570 km to 23 000 km (3.63 Earth radii) and ceased operations in January 1991. /maf_16ms_vmsbin (NSSDC ID: 81-070A-04B) The RIMS data are provided as Mission Analysis Files (MAF). Each MAF data record consists of 8 seconds of RIMS data (512 samples, each sample a 1/64 sec measurement), in time order. The filenames are yyyydddThhmm_HHNN_de1_rims_maf_16ms.vmsbin. Subroutines are provided to perform decoding and decommutation of the data. There are more than 70 source files and a text file with a description of all subroutines. RIMS data are also available from the RIMS homepage at http://wwwssl.msfc.nasa.gov/ssl/pad/sppb/RIMS/ The following links provide access to data set documentation and software: (1) SFDU description of the instrument, MAFs, Modes, etc. https://spdf.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/documents/old/miscellaneous_documents_from_nssdc/b46610.txt (2) SFDU description of the Mission Analysis File format https://spdf.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/documents/old/miscellaneous_documents_from_nssdc/b46608.txt (3) A description of the CATALOGUE.TXT file https://spdf.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/documents/old/miscellaneous_documents_from_nssdc/b46607.txt (4) An ASCII listing of the on/off times and other information (CATALOGUE.TXT) https://spdf.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/documents/old/miscellaneous_documents_from_nssdc/b46611.txt (5) A description of the RIMSMODE.TXT file (mode changes) https://spdf.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/documents/old/miscellaneous_documents_from_nssdc/b46609.txt (6) An ASCII listing of the instrument modes (RIMSMODE.TXT) https://spdf.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/documents/old/miscellaneous_documents_from_nssdc/b46612.txt NSSDC Contact: or phone 1-301-286-6695 for more information.
