Dynamics Explorer-1 (DE 1) Energetic Ion Composition Spectrometer (EICS) Data This directory gathers data for the EICS instrument that flew on the DE 1 spacecraft. DE-1 was launched on 3 August 1981 into an elliptical orbit with an altitude range of 570 km to 23 000 km (3.63 Earth radii) and ceased operations in January 1991. /satf_30ms_vmsbin (NSSDC ID: 81-070A-06C,D) The EICS data consist of high-resolution SATF files in VAX/VMS binary encoding. The file name yyyydddThhmm_HHNN_de1_eics_satf_X_tnnn.vsmbin includes start (hhmm) and stop (HHMM) time and the original tape number (tnnn). The EICS instrument was usually operated in either the drum or fast mode. The fast mode samples the phase space distribution function at two different ion mass settings with 15 degrees angular resolution and 15 energy steps in 24 sec. While, the drum mode samples the phase space distribution function at four different ion mass settings with 7.5 degrees angular resolution and 15 energy steps in 96 sec. 96-sec averages of H+, O+, and He+ fluxes (81-070A-06E) in CDF format are available for plotting and downloading at http://cdaweb.gsfc.nasa.gov/. The fluxes are given in 15 energy (~0.01 to ~20 keV/e) and 14 pitch angle bins.
