Dynamics Explorer-1 (DE 1) Spin-Scan Auroral Imager (SAI) Data This directory gathers data for the SAI instrument that flew on the DE 1 spacecraft which was launched on 3 August 1981 into an elliptical orbit with an altitude range of 570 km to 23 000 km (3.63 Earth radii) and its operations ceased in January 1991. /uv_cdf (NSSDC ID: 81-070A-03A) /software The processed SAI data are available in CDF format in the uv_cdf directory. Many software packages can read and display CDF data. For convenience, a copy of the University of Iowa xSAI package, xsai_idl-1_3.zip, is in the software directory. This program requires the commercial package, Research Systems IDL. The original SAI data in their native format are available from offline tape. This PI-provided, raw format has header info with pointing data followed by encoded sweep data (see SAIDOC document). The software for reading and processing the native format are in the software/old directory. There are 17 PI-provided Fortran source files to be used with the SAI native format data files (see SSCDOC document). SAI data and information are also available from the SAI project homepage at The following links provide access to data set documentation and software: (1) List of all data files (FILELIST.DAT) (2) Description of the FILELIST.DAT file (3) Description of the data file format (SAIDOC) (4) Description of the software files (SSCDOC) NSSDC Contact: or phone 1-301-286-6695 for more information.
