Plasma Modeling Studies
The team has developed extensive numerical models to support ongoing plasma data analysis and plasma theory efforts, to help define future mission concepts, and to refine current instrument designs. Research in the area of plasma models includes:
- Models of the magnetospheric total density
- Models of particle kinematics in the ionosphere and upper atmosphere
- Models of magnetospheric particle transport
- Modeling of flight plasma instrumentation
- Modeling in support of the IMAGE mission
Present Models:
- Forecasting Relativistic Electrons
- Ring Current Model

Laboratory Studies
The Space Plasma Physics Team at MSFC has developed the specialized instrumentation required for effective plasma observations in the laboratory. Research in the laboratory includes:
- Plasma acceleration and heating
- Active plasma experimentation using particle beams
- Plasma flow around obstacles
- Electrodynamics of dusty plasmas
- Calibration of flight plasma instrumentation
