This disk contains the data from the ClusterII and DoubleStar missions stored at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) under the Instrument Data File Set (IDFS) root directory. There are two (2) data USB archive disks included in this archive. These disks are copies of data stored at SwRI which were the result of a data mirror run with Mullard Space Science Laboratory (MSSL) during the Cluster Plasma Electron And Current Experiment (PEACE) satellite program. Data contained on each disk is different and represents various accumulations from the archiving process. Each disk contains a subset of storage areas at SwRI. The two disks contain different data files even though the data structure on each disk might be the same. The manufacture's software and data structures remain on the drives and an additional directory (the IDFS directory) contains the information needed for this archive. The data is stored in IDFS format. IDFS consists of header (H), data (D), virtual instrument description file (VIDF), and Plot Information and Description File (PIDF). This archive assumes that the user knows the IDFS format; however, in case the user is unfamiliar with the IDFS format, the IDFS description and documentation may be found at http://www.idfs.org. The main IDFS directory contains up to four (4) sub-directories as follows: CLUSTERII/ DOUBLESTAR/ IDFS_ACCESS_BUNDLE/ MODIFIED_V_and_P/ All IDFS files for the Cluster and DoubleStar missions missions are in stored in the CLUSTERII/ and DOUBLESTAR/ directories with the exception of the ClusterII PEACE experiment. For ClusterII PEACE, the original VIDFs and PIDFs have been modified to include many other unit conversions and additional processing options (like automatic removal of spacecraft potential). These modified VIDFs and PIDFs are found in the directory MODIFIED_V_and_P/. When processing or accessing the PEACE data, always use the VIDF and PIDF files under the MODIFIED_V_and_P/ directory. DO NOT use the VIDFs and PIDFs in the data directory. These VIDFs and PIDFs do not provide access to all of the functionality developed. Remember that the IDFS format is a working structure and not a data storage structure. The VIDFs and PIDFs provide instructions on how to process the header and data files into desired quantities. Only the VIDFs and PIDFs in the MODIFIED_V_and_P/ directory contain additional procedure descriptions needed to process the PEACE data files into geophysical quantities. The IDFS access software is included in the directory IDFS_ACCESS_BUNDLE/. In order to use the IDFS software, the IDFS needs to be set-up in a data base. The IDFS_ACCESS_BUNDLE/ code itself will not work until a proper data base has been established. For this, the user should contact Joey Mukherjee . For more details about the IDFS_ACCESS_BUNDLE/, see the README file under the bin sub-directory in the IDFS_ACCESS_BUNDLE/. Contact Carrie Gonzalez for assistance with the IDFS_ACCESS_BUNDLE/; however, the IDFS access software should work once a data base has been constructed and populated. It is recommended that the use of this data be achieved by installing the Southwest Data Display and Analysis System (SDDAS) software, available at http://www.sddas.org/ under the download tab. The SDDAS system provides tools for exercising and extracting data stored in the IDFS structure. Contact Sandee Jeffers for assistance.
